History of Science & Technology in Islam Museum - Istanbul

Introduction

The History of Science & Technology in Islam Museum in Istanbul is located in the building of the former Imperial stables. The building was once part of the Topkapi Palace in the Gulhane Park. Since opening its doors in 2008, it has displayed many models which once were built by the Muslim scientists and inventors. These instruments and tools were built for the museum by the University of Frankfurt’s Institute of Arabic and Islamic Sciences. There are many astrolabes on display inside the museum. One of them is a 10th century equatorium by Jafar al-Khazin is on display inside the museum.

Displays

The museum covers fifteen scientific fields including astronomy, mathematics, geography, physics, warfare, and chemistry among others. Among its displays it has astrolabes, reconstruction of old observatories, replica of water clock from Fez, Morocco. Few models of siege war machines and surgical instruments are also on display. Though, the museum doesn’t have many original items but offers an insight into the Islam’s glorious past.
