River Nile - Cairo

The Nile Corniche in Cairo is known for it’s high rise buildings. Here, the River Nile splits into two branches thus creating a small island in the middle called Gezira (Arabic for island). The Western bank of the Nile lies Zamalek district,  this district is popular among locals for evening walks, food and other activities.

6th October Bridge is one of many bridges which connects two banks of the river. Qasr al-Nil Bridge connects Cairo to Zamalek and the Gezira districts. On the Nile Corniche, all sorts of things were taking place, from a guy selling BBQ corn on the cob to a customer, a traditional Egyptian bread seller, tea and coffer seller, candy floss seller, people coming for Nile boat trip and some just jogging. Cairo has a very mix feelings of culuture, it could be very modern city yet it could be deeply rooted in the Islamic traditions.

In the past, the Nile River was also a vital waterway for transport but improvements in air, rail, and highway facilities beginning in the 20th century changed the African landscape. It led to less dependency on the waterway but still the Nile hold a special place in Egyptians’ hearts.
