Imam Ali Square - Isfahan

Imam Ali Square used to be the heartbeat of Isfahan in the past. This square goes back to the 11th century, during the Seljuk dynasty it was main hub of the city. During the Safavid period, the importance of this area decreased and they moved the main centre of the city to Naqsh-e Jahan Square.

It has lots of historical monuments around it, including a bazaar, Imam Mosque, Harun Vilayat, a madrasa and Bagh-e-Ghoushkhane Minaret (Ali Minar). Sultan Sinjar Mosque and Madrasa is beside the Imam Ali Square and famous Ali Minaret stands in one of it’s corners. A beautiful entrance was to the opposite the Sinjar Mosque and Madrasa and it was linked with Imam Baqir. It’s portico was adorne with colourful Persian tiles.

Area in front of the square has a small car park and a mini roundabout - dome and minarets of the Imam Mosque is visible to the right

A bazaar goes around the square and this bazaar resembles to any other bazaar in Iran. Abdol Razaq Street detached this bazaar from the main centre of Old Bazaar. Earlier in the day this bazaar was closed but opened again in the afternoon.
