History

Azadi Tower (Freedom Tower) is a part of the Azadi Cultural Complex in Tehran. In the past, this tower was known as the Shahyad Tower (King’s Memorial Tower). The reasons behind to build this “Y” shaped tower was to commemorate the 2500th anniversary of the First Persian Empire in 1971. Hossein Amanat, an Iranian-Canadian architect designed this tower with the mix of ancient Persian design and Islamic architecture.

Azadi Park

The tower is 50 meters (164 ft) tall and it is clad with more than 8000 cut stones. The Azadi Square has many fountains and one can also have a panoramic view of the Alborz Mountains. Azadi park is surrounded by a beautiful park which a heaven from the crazy traffic nearby.

The white marble used in the construction of this tower came from the Isfahan Province. The square around the tower was one of the main scenes of 1979 Revolution. Even today, this tower attracts different types of protests but much smaller in size. The Maqam Shaheed (Martyrs’ Memorial) in Algeria is designed after this beautiful tower. There was an entrance beside the tower (museum entrance) but I wasn’t allowed to enter, security was tight due to some high profile visit.
